Skills for the Socially Savvy Teen

Grades: 7-10

 

Each lesson is written in scripted form and lists supplies and handouts required. An additional lesson plan, the Power Point Lesson Plan, is included, indicating each Power Point slide location. Each lesson may be separated into segments at the discretion of the teacher.  All activity time limits are discretional.  Each lesson builds upon the previous one.

 

 

Purpose and Objectives:

 

In this 6 class, 6-hour course the students will learn principles of etiquette, how to treat others and themselves with respect, to develop self-confidence, and table manners.  The focus of this course is:

 

  • Developing healthy, safe and respectful relationships.
  • Becoming a considerate and compassionate person.
  • Developing proper hygiene habits.
  • Becoming a confident person.
  • Learning to dress appropriately.
  • Developing and using proper, respectful communication.
  • Developing and using proper etiquette in shared spaces.
  • Developing better table manners, body language, and proper table conversation.

Content Scope and Sequence:

 

Skills for the Socially Savvy Teen: Introduction teaches what it is to be valued, family relationships, how to be a good host and guest, and proper introductions.

 

Skills for the Socially Savvy Teen: Appearances teaches proper hygiene, confidence building, non-verbal communication, and attire. 

 

Skills for the Socially Savvy Teen: Communication covers all forms of communication, such as conversational skills, telephone etiquette, e-mail and written skills. 

 

Skills for the Socially Savvy Teen: Shared Spaces teaches the behavior expected in sahred spaces when alone and with friends.  Proper behavior while dining out, at sporting events, and at someone else's graduation is explored. Includes a discussion abou what makes a good friends. 

 

Skills for the Socially Savvy Teen: Table Manners teaches proper table manners, body language at the table, utensil usage, place settings, and proper table conversation.
